PutPlace is more than file backup. It gathers all the valuable digital stuff you’ve stockpiled over your lifetime — photos, documents, email, music and home movies. Then PutPlace protects and organizes it so you can find exactly what you need, wherever you are.
PutPlace is currently in beta, so you can test it for free. When it launches, they’ll offer annual subscriptions, presumably with rates varying based on the amount of storage used. This really isn’t big news for advanced users who are already on the offsite backup bandwagon, but there are still plenty of people who haven’t gotten there yet. If backup were easier, fewer novice users would have to go through the traumatic experience of losing everything to a hard drive failure. PutPlace might be able to help them by putting on a friendly, trustworthy face.
PutPlace Features
- Set and forget automated backup
- Access your files from anywhere
- Quick and secure
- Full backup of all your changes
- Works with all file formats

Yahoo now offers a beta version of its Delicious browser plug-in for online bookmarking functions.
(Credit: Yahoo)
Delicious, Yahoo’s “social bookmarking” site that lets people archive, tag, and share Web site addresses, got its start closely tied to the Firefox open-source Web browser. Now Yahoo is branching out to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, too.
The company released a beta version of the IE plug-in Tuesday (available on Download.com). Though there are differences, the IE version is similar, offering users the ability to add and tag bookmarks and to search their own bookmark collection.
“We’re very excited about this release, as we have many users who use Internet Explorer as their primary browser,” said Nick Nguyen, senior product manager for Delicious, in a Delcious blog postint Tuesday.
The software works on IE 6, IE 7, and the IE 8 beta on Windows XP and Vista, Yahoo said.

Facebook Chat might’ve had a simple and quiet launch, but a month later, the social network is already announcing plans to upgrade.
Engineer David Reiss announced Tuesday evening on the Facebook Developer Blog that Facebook Chat will soon have an Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) interface–that’s better known as Jabber. This will mean that external clients will be able to incorporate Facebook Chat, currently restricted in most cases to the browser.
Universal IM clients Digsby (which is PC-only) and Adium (which is Mac-only) have already worked in ways to support Facebook Chat.
Through Facebook’s official Jabber support, which is coming “in the near future,” Facebook members will be able to not only chat with their friends, but also see friends’ profile pictures through the IM client and set their Facebook statuses.
